Sleep care in Australia: Medicare rebates and direct GP referral

Last checked September 14, 2026. Coverage rules change — confirm with the official sources listed below.

In short

In Australia a sleep study is Medicare-rebated when it meets MBS criteria. Since 2018 a GP can refer you directly — without first seeing a sleep or respiratory physician — if validated questionnaires show a high likelihood of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea: a STOP-Bang score of 3 or more, an OSA50 of 5 or more, or a high-risk Berlin score, together with an Epworth Sleepiness Scale of 8 or more. Otherwise a specialist consultation is needed for a Medicare-funded study. Studies are done in sleep laboratories or at home, and some providers bulk bill.

The path to a Medicare-rebated sleep study

  1. See your GP. The GP administers screening questionnaires — STOP-Bang, OSA50 or the Berlin Questionnaire, plus the Epworth Sleepiness Scale.
  2. Direct referral if criteria are met. MBS items 12203 (laboratory) and 12250 (home) allow direct GP referral when STOP-Bang ≥ 3, OSA50 ≥ 5 or Berlin high-risk and Epworth ≥ 8.
  3. Otherwise, a specialist first. If scores do not meet the thresholds, the direct-access pathway cannot be used for a Medicare-funded study and a sleep or respiratory physician consultation is arranged.
  4. The study. Laboratory-based or home-based, per established models of care; a sleep physician reports it and treatment is discussed.

Bulk billing and gap fees

Some sleep-study providers bulk bill Medicare-eligible studies; others charge a gap. Ask what the out-of-pocket cost is, whether the physician’s report is included, and whether the provider is NATA-accredited. Public hospital sleep laboratories run on referral through the public system.

CPAP and private health insurance

CPAP devices are not covered by Medicare. Some private health extras policies contribute toward the cost; state-based schemes exist for eligible patients (for example Queensland Health’s Sleep Disorders Program). Ask the sleep clinic what applies in your state.

Questions people ask

Can a GP refer me straight for a sleep study?

Is a sleep study bulk billed?

Some providers bulk bill Medicare-eligible studies; others charge a gap fee. Ask before booking.

Does Medicare pay for CPAP?

No. Some private health extras cover part of the cost, and some states run schemes for eligible patients.
