STOP-Bang self-check for obstructive sleep apnea

STOP-Bang is an eight-question screening questionnaire developed by Dr. Frances Chung and colleagues and used by clinicians around the world to estimate the likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea. It takes about two minutes. It cannot diagnose sleep apnea — only a sleep study can — but it gives you a clear, evidence-based starting point for a conversation with your doctor.

What to do with your result

  1. Note your score and the questions you answered “yes” to.
  2. If your risk is intermediate or high, or you are simply concerned, bring this to your family doctor or a sleep clinic. See the regional guides for how referral works where you live.
  3. Read the plain-language guide to sleep apnea so you know what a sleep study involves and what treatment options look like.
